March!?
about 4 years ago – Thu, Mar 31, 2022 at 08:41:43 PM

I missed an entire month. I’d say I’m not sure how that happened but I’ve been hella busy, so I’m also kinda not surprised. Sorry about that.

So here’s where we are.

I’ve got the void chapter completed, aside from the previously mentioned tuning steps. Our graphic designer has recently gotten a big promotion at the day job and was basically unavailable through February, so some of that work has been a little stalled.

I was hoping we’d have more of those tuning steps done, and therefore be able to share an updated PDF but some compilation steps have had knock-on text shifting effects and it really needs a lot of fussing to get it back together into a presentable format. But in good news, completing that step pretty much means it’s done! (Aside from an index and page references, but those require stable page numbers and that’s a very different can of worms, and a super-final-no-other-changes kind of step.)

I’ve also been in touch with a printer and gotten some questions answered. In good news, while certain options are limited, we’re not otherwise expecting any major delays on the printing side.

Getting this book out the door and into print is at the top of my priorities list now. We'll get there as soon as we can.

Happy New Year! We're in the homestretch.

The edits to the last of the adventures have come in, and we have been thinking about how these fit into our layout.

The sticky point we’ve been addressing is that two out of three of the adventures are written with pregenerated characters in mind, and this presented a question: are these sufficiently useful and valuable pages that they should be included in the book? (We’re going to be making them available for certain, the question is only about how best to present them).

As we’ve talked about before, the character sheet design is really complex and this book is not particularly designed to showcase individual characters. We ended up deciding that this would would be another puzzle that we don’t think is worth solving at the cost of the delays it would incur, much less the cost-increase of another (minimum) 12-30 pages we weren’t necessarily expecting to include.

Ultimately, the one adventure that didn’t include pre-generated characters is the one we’ll include in the book. It’s a nice one because it is the most flexible of the three we have in terms of an add-in to your own campaign as opposed to relying on specific pregenerated characters and it also showcases a little bit of our thoughts on adventure design based on historical events.

So today, we have been putting some finishing touches on that adventure in order to get it into layout, and since that’s the last piece of the manuscript, we’re just down to the grind of all the final touch-ups. In our experience, this part of publishing is the final grind, since now we’re very closely looking at all of the details and doing the final addition of non-primary graphical elements, typographical work like copyfitting, and then wrangling page references. Frankly speaking, this part is extremely tedious and time consuming, but we've already made a big dent in it since all of the other chapters were ready for that work. So... back to the grind, but it's the homestretch.

Ugh, we’re so close...
